My son’s preschool came up with a great idea for how to collect donations for the local food pantry. For the month of November, they have asked every family to bring in one non-perishable food item to be donated. So every weekend, I take my youngest son to the grocery store with me so that he can help pick out the food item we will contribute. I feel it is important to involve him in this decision so that he can try to understand what donating this food item to the food pantry means for other families who may be less fortunate then us.
The first week he picked soup. He specifically wanted chicken noodle, his favorite. The second week, he chose spaghetti sauce, followed by applesauce and then baked beans. He proudly carried his food item to school every Monday along with 12 other preschoolers to add to the pile of donations the school collected.
In early December, all of the collected items will be donated to the food pantry. The cost to each family? Approximately $5.00. A very small price to pay to ensure a member of our community, who may be struggling in this current economy, has something nutritious to eat.
Remember every donation, no matter how small, can make a big difference. What can you do to make a difference?
