Know a kid who gives back to their community?

Ringlin’ Bros. and Barnum & Bailey have created The Barnum Award to honor and celebrate children who give back to their own communities in creative, innovative ways.

Do you know a kid, or a group of kids, between the ages of 6-14 who have used creativity or innovative thinking to develop a solution to a pressing issue affecting your community? Have they selflessly dedicated their time to a community service project? Has this initiative already begun to generate positive results?

Then nominate them for The Barnum Award!

The judges will select three deserving children and/or groups in your area to receive The Barnum Award.

  • Gold – The Gold Award Recipient will receive $1,000 to fund future community service endeavors and a gold-finish Barnum Award.
  • Silver – The Silver Award Recipient will receive $750 to fund future community service endeavors and a silver-finish Barnum Award.
  • Bronze – The Bronze Award Recipient will receive $500 to fund future community service endeavors and a bronze-finish Barnum Award.

Additionally, all three award recipients will be honored at a pre-show award ceremony during the opening night performance of The Greatest Show On Earth in the show city/venue selected on the Nomination.

Making a Difference to Granite State Charitable Organizations

Teams are registering for the Granite State’s First 7DayPSA Competition, brought to New Hampshire by Red River Theatres, Hatchling Studios, WMUR-TV 9, and Smoky Quartz Pictures.

Volunteer filmmakers will produce a Public Service Announcement for a New Hampshire Charitable Organization that otherwise could not afford to hire an ad agency to produce such a spot.  All winning, client-approved, broadcast eligible PSAs will air on WMUR TV-9 in 2011.

The Competition week runs September 23-30, 2010. Teams can choose to pick up their Surprise Client Assignments and Producers Packs from Red River Theatres in Concord or at Hatchling Studios in Portsmouth (which is donating editing services for the final reel of PSAs).

All completed PSAs will screen at Red River Theatres, the Host of the NH 7DayPSA Competition, on Monday, October 11, at 7 p.m. Top prizes from Saymore Trophies will be awarded to the best of several categories, including Best Overall PSA. The top PSA may be eligible for an EMMY nomination.

The 7DayPSA Competition launched from Providence, Rhode Island with the Premiere event in January and February 2010.  Smoky Quartz Productions, the only New Hampshire-based team to compete in the Ocean State, took home the Top Prize and several Best of Categories, including Best Director to Adam Jones of Henniker, Best Cinematographer to Gary Anderson of Deerfield, and Best Editor to Marc Dole of Portsmouth, with “To the Power of YOU” produced for Big Sisters of Rhode Island. The spot is being nominated for a Hatch Advertising Award and will be nominated for an EMMY Award in early 2011.

Team registrations are currently being accepted at Red River Theatres (www.redrivertheatres.org). For more information, please visit the NH 7DAYPSA blog (http://nh7daypsa.blogspot.com) or the National 7DayPSA website (www.7daypsa.org).  Stay tuned to latest developments via Twitter @NH7DayPSA.  Interested Donors or Team Sponsors may contact Dana Biscotti Myskowski at nh7daypsa@gmail.com.

Volunteers commended for help in Lebanon, NH

I love being able to pick up the newspaper and read about neighbors helping neighbors.

Fosters Daily Democrat today posted an article entitled “Lebanon selectmen commend volunteers who helped repair vandalism”.

“The Lebanon Board of Selectmen commended all of the volunteers who showed up to help with repairing the vandalism done this weekend at the new Civil War Memorial at the municipal building.”

Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time, and thanks to Fosters Daily Democrat and any other news sources that shared the story.

Volunteer your time to a worthy organization this spring

Many local organizations need volunteers to help out this spring.  Here’s just a sampling of worthy organizations in New Hampshire that could use your assistance:

AmeriCorps is organizing a day of service on Saturday, May 15th.  Participants will clean up from the recent storm damage and prepare for the NH State Parks spring opening at Pawtuckaway, Bear Brook, and Kingston State Parks.  Check in will be at 9:00 AM, the cleanup will be held from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM, followed by a celebratory party.

Field of Dreams Therapeutic Riding Program needs volunteers to assist with therapeutic riding lessons at their Chichester facility.  The organization needs volunteers to lead the students and horses during riding lessons, groom/saddle the horses prior to the lessons, clean the stables, feed/water the horses, and maintain the facilities and equipment.  Lessons begin in the summer, so the organization needs help starting this spring.  Contact – Theresa Brown, Board President, (603) 798-4110.

This organization is looking for foster caregivers to ensure that more of these animals get a second chance at life. Foster parents must be at least 21 years old, nurturing, loving and compassionate and willing to temporarily care for sick or pregnant cats. HSFN will provide any materials required for the care of the foster animal(s).  All foster cats have tested negative for Feline Aids and Leukemia virus and are given all appropriate vaccines before placement in the home.
